In the 2009-10 year, John worked with Kaumana Elementary in Hilo, Hawaii. There he worked with teachers to develop hands-on robotics activities and helped coach an after-school robotics club. Using Lego Mindstorms, he illustrated principles of optimal control.

In the 2010-11 year, John worked with Moanalua Middle School in Honolulu. He also helped organize a Math Circle.
