SHARING MATHEMATICAL EXPERTISE

SUPER-M supports graduate students in mathematics by providing them opportunities to improve their communication, research, and teaching skills through partnerships with K-12 schools.

With SUPER-M, each Fellow integrates and disseminates their mathematics research in K-12 schools and outreach events throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Through their knowledge of mathematics as a research discipline, we hope Fellows enrich the mathematical content and instruction in K-12 classrooms via grade appropriate activities/lessons.

As a SUPER-M Fellow, you will be expected to: take part in the two-day workshop in August, complete the semester course “Issues in K-12 Mathematics Education”, design workshops for teachers based on your research, spend 10-15 hours per week in your K-12 classroom, devote an additional 5 hours per week to the various outreach events for K-12 education throughout the academic year, design and run various holiday and summer programs to promote STEM, and work with local institutions to raise awareness within the State of Hawaiʻi for the modern need of mathematical proficiency.

SUPER-M Fellows are compensated via stipend payments, totaling in $30,000, supplemented by an additional $10,500, non-exceedable and specifically for tuition, fees, and health insurance. The initial appointment for SUPER-M fellows last for a twelve-month period. However, stipends and benefits may be renewed for a second twelve-month period.

SUPER-M will only accept applications from full-time graduate students within the Department of Mathematics at UH Mānoa. Students may apply concurrently to SUPER-M and the Department of Mathematics’ graduate program. However, a SUPER-M Fellowship is offered upon acceptance into the Department of Mathematics’ graduate program only. Fellows must also be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States of America.

With the end of our grant, SUPER-M is no longer accepting applications.
